Opening sequence research

I have researched the opening titles of many differnt films with similar themes within the thriller/japanese genre. There are many differnt: editing techniques; music tracks & sound effects that i would like to put in our opening sequence.

First is the effect of speeding up the camera shot to show a huge increase in speed, which can probably be done when the 'Shinigami' enters the 'Human's' head and posses him. the approuch upto entering the back of the head could be sped up consiberably with the effect of fast pace.

Secondly, deep, almost un-heard noises on the underlay all the time, except from during the car scene due to diagetic music coming from the car, will create a dramatic and layered atmosphere; it would also create tension and show mysterity. I also suggest the idea of maybe (only quiet) car engines moving in the back ground to give a dirty effect.

Lastly i suggest the best time to shoot the film would be in overcast conditions wintertime to create miserable mysterious effect, complementary to the sound and editing effects.

BBfc- certificate for our film

Distributor research

Sony Pictures Classic

Sony Pictures Classics is an art-house division of Sony Pictures Entertainment founded in December 1991 that distributes, produces and acquires independent films from the United States and around the world. It has a history of making reasonable investments for small films, and getting a decent return.

20th Century Fox

Some of 20th Century Fox's most popular movie franchises include Star Wars, Ice Age, Garfield, X-Men, Die Hard, Alien, Revenge of the Nerds, Planet of the Apes, Home Alone, Night at the Museum, Predator, Alvin and the Chipmunks, and The Chronicles of Narnia.

Halestorm Entertainment

Halestorm Entertainment is a film production and distribution company based in Orem, Utah. It was founded in January 2001 by Kurt Hale and Dave Hunter.[1] Halestorm films are largely created by, for, and about Latter-day Saints, and usually contain a high amount of clichés and stereotypes about Mormon behavior and culture.

Dogwoof Pictures

Dogwoof Pictures , Dogwoof, is a film distributor company working in the United Kingdom. The company releases many films, documentaries, foreign language films, but is perhaps best known for the release of the films Fateless, Viva Zapatero! and EMR, the latter being the first simultaneous release in the UK on Theatrical, DVD and TV.

Personally i think that we should choose either Sony Pictures Classic or Dogwoof Pictures as they both distribute foreign films, and with the japanese twist to our film i think that would be appropriate

I have looked on the bbfc website http://www.bbfc.co.uk/recent/films , I think considering other films of the same genre . e.g. Death note 1 and 2 within the last ten years theses have been 15 certificate, therefore I think the best certificate would be either 12a his post or 15. this will be decided shortly and added as a comment on to this post. Possible Locations

here are two possible locations for the filming the filming, the numbers one and two are the possible locations, i will wright more detail about them in the next posts with a closer up picture

Extreamly rough poster idea

Ok, this is an incredibly rough poster idea, iv discused the ideas with corey jackson. These are basicaly preliminary sketches of mine and coreys ideas, the final piece will obviously have text on it. Photos will need to be taken and manipulated if this idea is picked.

PS, sorry about spelling mistakes, iPhone dosent have spell check
ooh before i forget, i got the design of the eye from here

My New Idea - man im full of them tonight

well since my last blog I've had an idea and since we were all supposed to put our ideas here for the film i figured id do it before I forgot. This is a very simple idea and is only a slight expansion on what we have already, but ive been doing some research in films and anime of the same genre and ive notice that the good things ive seen in these are often simple. what my idea is, is when the gun shot is sounded after i turn the ipod on everything goes silent , the film proceds as usual but with no sound accept the main charactors voice saying something like 'My name is Corey Jackson and upon till now i was an ordinary kid , with ordinary troubles. but something happend on my way home today and from that second on, my life had changed in an instant ' we can modify this to our liking for time or how it sounds later. This idea is used frequantly within this genre and as such can help the viewer decide on wat sort of film it is , so in theory we atract the correct audience.

Aswell as watching films and anime I stumbled upon a book i owned, this book was about possesion of humans not to abstract form our idea and from this book have adopted the idea that if a human is possessed by the shinigami u can tell from the eyes of the human , now this is mealy to show that i have thought about this but this could be used in our film poster.

Just something for you to think about, Corey x

A little thought

So I've been doing some thinking in regards to this film , and what i think is the best way forward, to make sure everyone's ideas are included, is that we stick to the initial idea which has been boggled by tom, i think we all agree that this is what we had in mind for our film. but also i would like to include an idea previously boggled by James, this is the opening screen where the main character and the shinigami are in a hospital room with a mono log over the top of it. I can see this taking a short amount of time but adding a lot of effect to the film. This can easily be fitted into our film, as such I will be bringing the concept of bringing these two ideas together next time we are together. Until then comments would be accepted thankfully :) . Links

Here are a few links that we have used in our blog so far:
- For the name of our production company we used BabbelFish Translator to translate "Black Cat Films" into Japanese, to give 'Kuroneko Maku'
- We used Youtube to research similar style films with tainted camera POV, like in the film 'Death Note'

Toms Ideas

Starts off shot of the sky, pans down slowly to see corey looking down (hood up), as it continues to pan it focuses on the iPod, Corey presses play on the iPod, as he presses play, a gun shot goes off, and goes to black

(possibly the 1st tag line here)

goes to a view from passenger hand side of
the car in front of the car. camera angle is set up as shown in the diagram

Hewit opens the car door and gets in to the car, Farimond then drives off.

back to corey who is now walking along side the road
(flicks between corey and reaper vision, dont know how yet)
corey turns to face the road,
reaper comes out of bushes (POV reaper shot) goes into the back of his head,
POV walking into the road, hears screaching wheels, turns head(therefore camera as well) to see car coming towards cam,

Bright light or something

flicks back to over sholder shot of corey looking out at road, car goes past, scene ends

(in middle of that all other tag lines)

James' Ideas.

Just a few ideas.
Italics are stage directions
Opening shot is black, with narration.

Sometimes, when threatened, the human body is capeable of doing inhuman things to preserve its well been. Open eye efect on camera, as the speach finishes, from hospital looking room, lift arms up, bandaged, like after an accident. Looking around room after looking at hands.
But after what ive been through. I know the truth, and the reality is right there in front of me. looks to corner of room where a hoded man is sitting, looki down, face is obscured
That guy there, hes the reason im still alive. Because he isnt human, but lets just start from the beginning, im sure this will all seem confusing for an outsider. eyes close effect
This should take aprox 25-30 seconds.

-----------------------------------------------

Thats a breif intro i thought up, dont know if its anygood, or of any use but hey, an idea is an idea aint it? anyway continueing, this is more to the lines of whats already done.

Play button comes up, like the BBC iplayer click sound, push in effect, and white highlight round background Music starts.
Leg brush past effect, like walking, on a black background. for a few steps.
Black background fades to scenery with walking foreground still on.
Walks, the stops. Camera, zooms out and pans to behind person in one movement to an over shoulder shot.
SORRY BUT WHY DO WE NOT HAVE A NAME YET, SAVES WRITING PERSON EVERYTIME + IT WILL LOOK MORE PROFESSIONAL AND A SCRIPT CAN BE DAFTED. Even though it is only a 2 min clip =P sorry for caps i forgot it was on and i cba to type it out again
MAIN looks at traffic light Red man, green light. . . .

To a distorted 'shinigami' shot, from the side. The shot pans up and forwards, like a person standing up and starting to walk. The camera stops at the side of MAIN and does the same as he did, looks to on-coming traffic only a single car in the distance is in veiw, then up at the traffic light Green man. . .

Camera cuts to a shot of the side of the road, showing both MAIN and SHINIGAMI, main takes one step onto the road. SHINIGAMI reachs up with on handplacing the back side of his han on MAIN's chest as if to stop him, and states 'Dont Walk' MAIN turns to see nobody.

First person camera He looks back up at the traffic light still green man, looks to the on-coming traffic. The car is considerabely closer, and just goes straight past the camera, the camera pans, but slower than the car to imtate higher speed.

Screech Noise car, turned to side in middle of road. Blood stain, child laid at side of car. SHINIGAMI hand on shoulder, 'That would have been you'.
Camera, tracks to road, following the blood stain, to reveal the word and title SHINIGAMI in blood.

-----------------------------------------------

This is an idea, which personally, i really like, you may not find it fitting. But this is still early stages, try get all big ideas out i the open ASAP.

I hae an idea, for abit of back story, well. . . When i say backstory, i mean ending, with a twist. Even though this wont be in our footage, itwould be nice to put more research into the film, and give it direction.

As said above, the first passage i wrote, i was thinking that could be the middle of the film, but also shown at the start. Like a Fight Club style thing. But like, have the hospital scene in the middle of the film, well plan it out to be in the middle. The more work that is done on this, the bettr if workout a full film plot. This could well be high marks across the board, just saying.

Also had an idea, of like a snapshot thing. Like, one shot of a reaction, but a still, then an image of the drivers reaction, like a snapshot of ractions. Blargh i dunno, something.

-----------------------------------------------

I thought about maybe an ending, with a twist, *and yes i know ive done ive done this in a weird order* Like maybe, it ends with him, and the shinigami stood on a cliff at night. For some insane reason, maybe they were having a picnic or something, and their both wearing hoods, important fact. And the main guy says something like 'Who are you?' the shinigami stands up, and walks to the edge of the cliff, , the main follows him and stands directly behind him. Shinigami places his hands on the side of his hood, and pulls it back revealing himself. 'I am you'

The main guy falls to his knees, and holds his head with both hands. Then Black and white flashbacks of bits of the film, where hes realising that it was him, oh yeah, i thought maybe the shinigami, could be responsable for a few random deaths here and there i dunno. But yea, it shows instead of the shinigami being responsable, it was actualy him killing the people. He screams, the camera zooms out as the scream goes on, showing he has took his hood down. Hint Hint he stands up, looks towards the camera, with his eyes closed, looking down. And says simply 'Im Sorry'. Leans backwards. Closing shot on him falling backwards, arm up as if waving goodbye.

-----------------------------------------------

There thats it, my ideas, no doubt ill come up with some stuff later on, but yeah big post for me. Im sure in the tie ive written this smoeone else has probably don it too, Its took me over an hour =D ouch!!.

Design Ideas

Here are afew design ideas for how want things to look, firstly part of our film is going to be filmed in POV, this is going to be POV of the Reaper, so we want it to be diffrent to a normal shot so the audience can tell when the reaper is looking. I think a red tint would be an effective means of getting this point across and i think it looks effective
(print screen from japaneese film 'Death Note')

This Second image is of what we want the font to look like when the text comes up on our film. we believe this is effective because it is easy to read but also has a slight Gothic look to it

Our Production Company

The name of the production company we have chosen is Kuroneko Maku we thought of this idea as it is japanese for Black Cat Films.

Blogged By:
Corey Jackson &
James Hewitt.

Our Pitch

A God of Death, (Shinigami), is on the trail of a Human destined to die; to save him he must possess and show him his impending doom. Unfortunately the Shinigami are not visible to the Human Eye, relying on benevolent trust on a unseen force.

Original Idea

Film Name - Shinigami
Which literally means "Reaper" or "God of death" in Japanese.
Original Ideas -
Our film is based around the Japanese belief of Gods of Death; we decided to put a spin on the idea by the Shinigami "Death God" being good and saving the main characters, on several occasions, from certain Death. In the opening scene we see "The Human" walking along, as he is about to cross the road. The Reaper, who is hiding in the bushes, enters the Human through the back of his head and foresees what would happen if he crossed the road, he then goes on to stop the human from crossing the road therefor saving his life. The Scene then ends with a blank screen and heavy breathing.

Tag Line: Would you trust some thing you cant even see?
Would you have faith in the unknown?
Do you believe in . . . Shinigami.
